No, these aren't stewardess costumes. Instead, these are Galaxy Police Officer costumes from the anime series, Tenchi Muyo! Officers Mihosi and Kiyone are placed (i.e. stranded) on Earth to prevent Officer Mihosi's well meaning but catastrophic actions from destroying the universe.

The costumes were rather involved uniforms that needed a certain, "space" feel to them. To accomplish this, we chose a fabric-backed latex rubber with a pearlescent finish. Not only did it have the right look about it, but it also came in exactly the right colors! Unfortunately, even though we had considered it, we didn't realize exactly how difficult it would be to sew and wear!

To prevent us from completely overheating, the light gray material for the pants and the lower part of the sleeve is a gabardine twill that would allow the skin to breathe. The pants were created as a uniform style pants that extended up to the chest area. There is an invisible zipper in the back, and piping was sewn in the front and back crease to duplicate the anime design. On the left, there is a latex panel in a "key" style pattern.

Even though the jacket was based on a 1950's coat pattern, it took four muslin mock-ups and a dozen pattern verisons to complete the final design. The most difficult portions were the exaggerated sholders and the blue waist panel. Actually, everything on this coat was impossible. This, more than anything else we have done, had a lot of swears. The collars and the ties were also made out of latex. And look, on Kiyone's tie is the blue detailing!! Look, Look!! The hats were formed out of buckrom and millinery wire.
